Profile
The Whangārei Tramping Club is a friendly, volunteer-run group for people who enjoy getting outdoors and exploring Northland on foot. With a long-established presence in the region, the club offers regular opportunities to discover local bush, coastlines, and hill country in the company of others.
The club organises tramps most Sundays, with members meeting at 8:30am in the Laurie Hall carpark before setting off. These day trips typically range from four to six hours and vary in terrain and difficulty. From the forested tracks of Pukenui and the Tangihua Ranges to coastal walks along the Whangārei Heads or beyond, the club’s schedule covers a wide range of Northland’s natural highlights.
Each trip is led by an experienced club member, and participants are expected to contact the leader by Saturday evening to confirm details and discuss any questions about the route or gear. While tramps are open to newcomers, the club encourages those who wish to join regularly to become members. An annual membership includes access to trip schedules, newsletters, and updates from the club.
The focus of the club is on shared outdoor experiences rather than formal meetings or social events. Safety, environmental care, and enjoyment are key values, and members are expected to be reasonably fit and prepared for a variety of conditions. Carpooling is often arranged for travel to trailheads, helping to reduce costs and make logistics easier.
The Whangārei Tramping Club provides a great way to connect with others who enjoy the outdoors, while experiencing some of Northland’s most beautiful and lesser-known walking routes. Anyone with good boots, a day pack, and a spirit of adventure is welcome to get in touch and give tramping a go.
