Black Shed Art Space is a vibrant gallery and studio space in Waipu, bringing together the creative energies of four talented local artists. Located at 7 Cove Road, this collaborative art space opened in October 2024 and has quickly become an exciting addition to Waipu’s growing arts scene. The space offers visitors a chance to experience contemporary New Zealand art in an intimate setting while meeting the artists who create it.
The gallery is run by Claire Nicholls, Laura Currie (Loveday Barnes), Sarah Crowe, and Soju, each bringing their unique artistic vision and style to the collective. Laura Currie, working under the name Loveday Barnes, creates contemporary abstract art featuring densely layered gestural works inspired by graphic and interior design. Having founded her practice in 2017 after transitioning from law to digital design, Laura divides her time between branding work and creating mixed media artwork and ceramics. Her paintings have found homes across New Zealand and internationally.
The Black Shed represents more than just a gallery space. It’s a working studio where visitors can witness the creative process firsthand, engage with artists, and gain insight into how contemporary art is made. This direct connection between artist and viewer creates an authentic and enriching experience that larger commercial galleries often can’t replicate.
The collaborative nature of Black Shed Art Space means the exhibitions and works on display are constantly evolving. Each artist brings their own perspective, medium, and technique, creating a dynamic environment where painting, mixed media, ceramics, and other art forms coexist. Whether you’re an established art collector, a curious beginner, or simply someone who appreciates creativity, the gallery welcomes everyone to explore and discover.
Visiting Black Shed Art Space offers a genuine glimpse into Waipu’s thriving creative community. It’s a place where art isn’t kept behind barriers but is accessible, approachable, and alive. The artists’ passion for their craft and their willingness to share their space makes Black Shed a must-visit destination for anyone interested in contemporary New Zealand art.
