Profile
Claphams National Clock Museum is one of Whangārei’s most distinctive attractions. Located at the Town Basin, it’s home to over 1700 clocks and timepieces, making it one of the largest collections of clocks in the Southern Hemisphere.
The museum’s origins go back to Archibald Clapham, a local collector and watchmaker with a passion for quirky and unusual clocks. His original collection has since grown into a major public museum, with an extraordinary range of timepieces on display. Visitors can explore everything from grand longcase clocks and marine chronometers to playful cuckoo clocks, sundials, and rare mechanical designs.
Claphams is well known for its fun, interactive approach, with exhibits designed to appeal to visitors of all ages. Knowledgeable staff are often on hand to share the stories behind some of the more unusual pieces, and children love the many moving and musical clocks.
Whether you’re a serious collector or simply curious about the art of timekeeping, Claphams National Clock Museum offers a fascinating and entertaining experience right in the heart of Whangārei’s waterfront.
