McLeod Bay is a sheltered harbour beach on the Whangārei Heads coast, about 25 minutes from the city. Facing east across Whangārei Harbour, it offers calm, shallow water that’s great for a swim or an easy paddle.
This isn’t a surf beach, but that’s part of its appeal. Families often set up along the grassy reserve that runs behind the sand, and it’s a popular spot to launch kayaks or paddleboards. There’s plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the views across the harbour.
McLeod Bay is a long-established local community with both permanent homes and holiday baches. The dramatic peaks of Mount Manaia rise just behind the bay, and the well-known walking track to the summit starts nearby.
You’ll find public toilets at the northern end and parking along the roadside. Parua Bay village, just a short drive away, has a café, gas station, and supermarket for supplies.
