Profile
Pātaua North offers a unique coastal setting where a peaceful estuary meets a surf beach—making it a versatile destination for families, swimmers, surfers, and nature lovers. Located about 30 minutes east of Whangārei, Pātaua is divided into two distinct areas: Pātaua South and Pātaua North, connected by a footbridge that spans the estuary inlet.
On the northern side, you’ll find a safe, family-friendly estuary ideal for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. The shallow water and sheltered conditions are perfect for younger kids, while the bridge is a local favourite for safe jumping when the tide is right.
Just beyond the estuary, the surf beach offers a more rugged experience, with waves suitable for surfing and boogie boarding. The beach stretches out toward a scenic headland and offers plenty of space to spread out, walk the shore, or try your hand at fishing. Behind the beach, Mt Pātaua offers a short but steep climb with spectacular panoramic views.
Pātaua North is a popular spot for holiday homes and camping, especially over summer. There are basic public facilities, including toilets and parking, but no shops—so make sure to bring everything you need for the day. The surrounding area remains mostly undeveloped, adding to the charm and quiet appeal of the spot.
Whether you’re after calm water or surf, Pātaua North provides both in a stunning natural setting.
