Profile
Taurikura Bay is a peaceful, sheltered beach located along Whangārei Heads Road, about 30 minutes from central Whangārei. Tucked between the bush-covered hills and the calm waters of the harbour, this quiet bay offers a relaxed setting that’s ideal for swimming, kayaking, and family outings.
The water at Taurikura is typically calm and shallow, making it a great choice for young children or those looking for a gentle swim. The beach has a mixture of soft sand and patches of shell, with clear views across the harbour to Marsden Point. The surrounding area is rich in birdlife, and dolphins are sometimes spotted in the bay.
It’s also a good launching spot for kayaks or paddleboards, with easy access to the water from the gently sloping beach. Onshore, there’s a grassy reserve with shade trees, a picnic area, and public toilets nearby. Taurikura is well loved by locals but remains quiet compared to more exposed surf beaches, even during summer.
The dramatic backdrop of Mount Manaia adds to the beauty of the area and offers an excellent hiking opportunity just a short drive away. Holiday homes and baches dot the coastline, making it a popular spot for longer stays.
Taurikura Bay is the kind of beach where you can slow down, enjoy the view, and take in the natural beauty of the Whangārei Heads.
