Profile
Ocean Beach, located at the end of Whangārei Heads Road, is one of the most popular and striking beaches in the Whangārei region. Framed by dramatic dunes and headlands, this expansive stretch of golden sand is a favourite among locals and visitors alike, particularly during summer.
Well known for its consistent surf, Ocean Beach is patrolled by the Whangārei Heads Surf Life Saving Club during the peak season, making it a safer spot for swimming and ideal for families. The waves here draw surfers year-round, with good breaks suitable for both intermediate and experienced riders. Bodyboarding and bodysurfing are also popular.
The beach is backed by rolling dunes and a scenic reserve that provides excellent walking opportunities. The Te Whara Track, which starts at nearby Urquharts Bay and climbs Mt Lion, offers panoramic views over the beach and out to the Hen and Chicken Islands.
Facilities at Ocean Beach include a car park, toilets, and picnic areas. While there are no permanent shops directly at the beach, supplies and cafés can be found in Parua Bay.
It’s worth noting that the beach is exposed to open ocean swells and can occasionally have strong rips—always swim between the flags when lifeguards are present. For those seeking a quieter experience, early mornings or weekdays offer a more peaceful atmosphere.
Ocean Beach combines natural beauty, accessibility, and recreational appeal, making it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the Whangārei coastline.
