Profile
AH Reed Memorial Park is a peaceful native forest reserve just minutes from central Whangārei, featuring one of the region’s most accessible and family-friendly bush walks. Its main highlight is the elevated canopy walkway, which winds through mature kauri trees and offers a rare perspective of the forest from above.
- Length: Approx. 1 km
- Time: 20–30 minutes
- Difficulty: Easy
- Highlights: Kauri trees, forest canopy bridge, waterfalls nearby.
The canopy walk itself is a short, gently sloping boardwalk suspended several metres above the forest floor. It allows visitors to walk among the upper branches of towering kauri, rimu, and tōtara trees while keeping feet dry and leaving the forest floor undisturbed. Interpretation panels along the route provide insights into the local ecology and conservation efforts.
Beyond the canopy walk, the park has several well-maintained tracks that link to nearby reserves, including the Hātea River Walkway and Whangārei Falls. Short loops and connecting trails make it easy to tailor your walk to suit your time and ability. The entire park can be comfortably explored in 30–60 minutes.
Footbridges, staircases, and native bush make this a favourite spot for both casual walkers and nature photographers. It’s also a great educational outing for families with children, offering a safe and manageable introduction to New Zealand’s forest environment.
Facilities include parking, toilets, and picnic areas. With its easy access, minimal elevation, and quiet setting, AH Reed Memorial Park is an ideal place to experience native bush close to town.
