Profile
The Te Whara Track is one of Northland’s premier full-day walks, tracing an ancient Māori trail along the ridge of the Bream Head Scenic Reserve. Linking Urquharts Bay with Ocean Beach, this 7.5 km point-to-point hike takes you through lush native bush, past dramatic rock formations, and along one of the most spectacular coastal ridgelines in the region.
- Length: 7.5 km one way
- Time: 5–6 hours
- Difficulty: Challenging
- Highlights: Dense native bush, cliffside views, historic pā sites, and sweeping coastal vistas.
Starting from the car park at Urquharts Bay, the track climbs steadily through coastal forest to the ridgeline, where you’ll be met with views over Whangārei Harbour, Marsden Point, and the Pacific Ocean. The track continues along the spine of the reserve, passing several dramatic high points including the summit of Te Whara (476 metres), before eventually descending toward Ocean Beach.
Along the way, you’ll encounter ancient pā sites, volcanic bluffs, and regenerating bush filled with birdsong. The track is well maintained but includes steep stair sections, uneven ground, and exposed ridgelines. It requires a good level of fitness and preparation, especially if walked in one direction only—arranging transport at the other end is recommended.
The walk typically takes 5–6 hours one way, or longer if you take time to enjoy the many lookouts along the route. There are no facilities on the track itself, so bring plenty of water, food, and suitable footwear.
Te Whara is not just a scenic challenge—it’s also a journey through natural and cultural heritage. This is one of the most memorable walks you can do in the Whangārei region.
