Profile
The Smugglers Bay Track is a short, easy walk that leads to one of Whangārei’s most beautiful hidden beaches. Starting from the car park at Urquharts Bay, this family-friendly track follows a gently sloping farm road over open pasture with views across Whangārei Harbour before descending to the soft sands of Smugglers Bay.
The return walk takes about 30 to 40 minutes and is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Along the way, you’ll pass grazing sheep, rolling hills, and several scenic vantage points overlooking the harbour and entrance to Bream Bay. The grassy path is wide and well-maintained, with just a few gentle rises before reaching the beach.
At Smugglers Bay, you’ll find a calm, sheltered cove fringed with pōhutukawa trees and golden sand. The water is typically clear and safe for swimming, making it an ideal spot for a picnic, a refreshing dip, or a quiet afternoon in nature. Boaties and kayakers also frequent the bay thanks to its easy access and calm conditions.
For those wanting to explore further, a side track from the main car park leads to an historic WWII gun emplacement on the hillside – well worth a visit for its views and military history. See more photos here.
There are no facilities at Smugglers Bay, so visitors should bring everything they need and take all rubbish away. This short walk is one of the easiest ways to experience the stunning coastal scenery Whangārei Heads has to offer.
